Special PopulationsTeaching special populations is the most rewarding part of education!! With these tech tools, you can enhance student engagement and increase rigor in your classroom. I love introducing new technology to my students with special needs and seeing their eyes light up when they make connections. Technology allows students different avenues to achieve success. |
English Language Learners and TechnologyDo you have English Language Learners (ELL) in your classroom? Are you looking for some new ways to help them learn English, while not adding extra work on your part? Here are 2 simple ways that you can use technology in your classroom to help ELL's: 1. Google Translate: The Google Translate extension and Google Translate app are excellent additions to your classroom, that can help ELL's quickly and easily translate any document, or lecture. 2. Youtube Closed Captioning Translate: If you already record your lessons, this is a great tool to incorporate in your classroom!! I record my lessons using Screencast-o-matic. Once I record the videos, I then upload the videos to Youtube. Then, I embed the Youtube links our Learning Management System for students to use.

Screencast-o-matic allows you to record your screen and publish as a video. This is a great way to scaffold your lessons for differentiation. I record my videos using Screencast-o-matic, then I upload the videos to Google Drive, and insert the videos in Google slides with interactive handouts. This way I don't need to publish my videos on Youtube for my students to see. You can also publish the videos on your LMS. Schoology allows you to set completion rules before advancing to the next folder. I love this tool because it's simple and easy to use, and best of all, it's FREE!!
Visit their site: Click Here Tellagami is a great way for your students to introduce themselves to each other. One feature that works great with students with special needs is the voice over or text to voice feature. If you have a non-verbal student, you can use this app to help the student communicate!! The student can even change the emotions on their Gami character!Kahoot is a Formative assessment tool that teachers can use to engage students in learning new content or as a review tool. This is a free tool that is easy to use. You can use pre-made Kahoots or create your own. There is even a new function that allows you to set the Kahoot as a homework assignment and students can go at their own pace to complete the Kahoot while competing with each other. I use QR codes all the time in my classroom!! It's a quick way to link students to websites. The way it works is a student uses a QR code reader, or Snap Chat to scan the code, then the device will pull up the web page. No more typing in long URL's or worrying about mistyping them! These also work well for Carousals, Flipping your classroom, Creating Digital learning centers and so much more!! For differentiated instruction, you can set up tutorial videos and and hang QR codes with typed instructions around your classroom for stations. To tier learning stations, you can do the same as above, but make 3 different levels to challenge students.
Nearpod is an interactive slideshow that can be used for formative assessment, reinforce learning and helps engage differentiated learners. I use this tool in my classroom to flip my classes by setting the Nearpod to "Student Paced" mode and allowing students to go at their own pace. The interactive content allows students to take formative assessments within the slideshow and get instant feedback. I absolutely love this tool for differentiated learners and scaffolding my lesson plans. These are some of my favorite applications to use for Special Populations as well as differentiated instruction in the classroom. |
